  • Hoya C12 Blue Cooling color correction filter
  • corrects the white balance of the image, especially reddish or orange tones
  • increases the overall temperature value
  • developed for film cameras, can also be used in digital photography

The HOYA BLUE COOLING and UMBER WARMING color correction filters are designed to correct the white balance of the image.

The BLUE COOLING filters increase the overall color temperature value and are used to correct reddish or orange tones when shooting outdoors or indoors under artificial light or fluorescent lighting.

The HOYA color correction filters were developed for shooting with film cameras, but are also used in digital photography.

Technology
The BLUE COOLING series has a C2, C4, C8 and C12 gradation, which refer to a mired shift of -20, -40, -80 and -120 respectively.

In other words: As can be seen in the transmission curve, the BLUE COOLING series reduces orange and reddish light entering the glass and thus indirectly enhances blue colors. The lower the Mired value, the less orange and red light enters the lens and the stronger the cooling effect.

It is possible to combine different BLUE COOLING filters to achieve different values, allowing photographers to achieve almost any desired color correction.

Mired
Mired, derived from the term micro-reciprocal degree, is a unit of measurement for specifying the color temperature. It is given by the following formula: M = 1,000,000K/T, where M is the Mired number, T is the color temperature and K is the Kelvin. As the formula is a reciprocal value, a higher Mired value means warmer light (= lower Kelvin value), while a lower Mired value means cooler light (= higher Kelvin value).

The Mired system has the advantage over the Kelvin system that the Kelvin scale is not linear. Therefore, working with mired values provides more accurate and controllable measured values than Kelvin.

Example
The current lighting condition is 4800K, with a mired value of 1,000,000 divided by 4800 = 208.3. Your desired color temperature is 5500K, where the mired value is 1,000,000 divided by 5500 = 182.

The difference is approximately 26 mired value. This means that if we want to correct the color to the film setting, we have to reduce the Mired value by -26.
